Can Arsenal win the Premier League?
By: Isaac McQueen
Arsenal Football Club is an English Premier League football club that originated in south London before moving up to north London. The team's manager is Arsene Wenger, perhaps the best manager in the Premier League. For the past couple years Arsenal F.C. has been underachieving. The team has finished above Tottenham (kiddie team that believes it can compete with London's finest) consistently, but the club's trophy drought has put a cloud over the outfit. Many Arsenal fans (myself included) we're becoming infuriated with the board's lack of motivation before the season kicked off. This anger only increased after Arsenal 's lost to Aston Villa on opening day. Thankfully the board finally opened up their wallets and signed one of the world's finest players, Mesut Özil. Özil has been good so far but the signing itself has had a great impact on the team. It re-boosted morale and appeased angry fans. Currently Arsenal are 1st in the premier league, to the surprise of many experts. Now the critics are questioning whether Arsenal can fend off in-form Manchester City, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, and Suarez led Liverpool. All three teams look deadly at the moment and Arsenal will have to continue to get good results for the rest of the season.
Injuries!!!!!
Just like every year Arsenal are facing many injuries mid-season. The biggest blow has to be Theo Walcott. After coming back from a previous injury and becoming a key player for the team again, he has injured his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season. Short-term injuries include Nacho Monreal who has a foot injury, Ramsey with a thigh injury, Mikel Arteta with a calf injury, Thomas Vermaelen with a knee injury, and Tomas Rosicky who has a broken nose. All are very important players and will be missed during such an important part of the season. With Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanoga out Arsenal are left with only one true striker. These injuries could definitely damage Arsenal 's title hopes.
Transfer Market?
The transfer market is open and team's are able to sign new recruits until the end of january. This could be a good time for Arsene Wenger to bring in some reinforcements to counteract the injury disease Arsenal seems to face every year. Chelsea who have a history of making terrible deals in january have already signed Nemanja Matic, a very creative defensive midfielder that will improve their defense and build-up play. Arsenal on the other hand, have a history of either staying out of the market in January or making panic buys that don't work out. To alleviate problems cause by injuries Arsenal must be very smart in their dealings. There are rumors that a high potential German youngster, Julian Draxler, might join the club from Schalke if a necessary chain of events occur. Unfortunately, this involves Arsenal's north London rivals (Tottenham) selling Lewis Holtby to Schalke as a replacement for Draxler. Tottenham no doubt are aware of this and will avoid helping Arsenal in any way (the scumbags).
The truth is that it will be very difficult for Arsenal to remain on top because of the competition. The team needs a few things to go their way to challenge the onslaught of competition. Luck is always appreciated but if the last 8 years without a trophy is anything to go by, the team needs to focus on hard work and smart managing tactics to win the title.
