My
Transfer To Prep
For
eleven and half years I went to Bluffton public schools. I went through their
elementary school. I went to both middle schools and half a year in the High
school. Why transfer now is the question I have heard. I still question my
parents’ decision today. I don’t question the school. Only the decision on the
timing.
It’s
2014 the start of the New Year. I’m heading home from Jacksonville, Florida
where I stayed for New Years with my friend Miles. I’m in the car with my dad
and we are making our way home to Bluffton, South Carolina and out of nowhere
my dad brings up Hilton Head Prep. My knowledge of Prep was unclear. I thought
of Prep as school for rich kids. A school for people who don’t fit in to
society. I think of soft people who can’t handle criticism. My knowledge of
this school was completely unclear. My dad brings up that he wants me to take a
tour of Hilton Head Prep. I asked him why but he never gave me a clear
response. Only “I Just want you to tour and see if you like it.” And “I think
the school would benefit you.” I thought I have done something wrong but I
realize now he was just looking out for my future.
Two
weeks later I took a tour of Hilton Head Prep and I realized how much smaller
the school is. I realized what a great learning opportunity this could be for
me. But one question remained in my head. Why now? Why so late in my
educational life? My dad and I, after the tour, went out to eat at New York
City Pizza to talk about pros and cons of Hilton Head Prep but as we were
talking I realized nothing negative was being said. The only concerns I had
were my friends at Bluffton High. I mentioned that I would miss them and my
baseball team. But my dad stated, “Son, we aren’t moving. You can still see
them on the weekends.” I agreed with this statement so that day in New York
City Pizza I decided that I will transfer to Hilton Head Prep not only for my
future but for my dad.
To
this day I don’t regret the decision of transferring to Hilton Head Prep. The
only negatives I’ve realized that came after transferring are missing my
friends and also the regret of not transferring earlier in my educational
career.
