book review of the game changer

Nick L.

The Game Changer, written by one the Washington Redskins quarterbacks Kirk Cousins, is a non-fiction sports auto biography, which is a book intended for kids and teenagers around my age group. It’s a combination of his highs and lows as a child, teen, student and athlete not only during grade school, but college as well. Like many other Auto Biographies written by athletes, they all have a very similar plot and message.

At the beginning of the book, the journey of how Kirk Cousins makes it into the NFL begins. As a young child he began to play three sports, baseball, basketball, and football. Even from an early age there were signs that Kirk was a very gifted athlete most notably on the football field. Not only from an early age was he a very gifted athlete, he was more importantly a gifted student as well.

As the book progresses he begins to talk about some of the specific things he did on the field and in the classroom he did to make him a better person. He began to talk about the things and experiences he had in middle school and beginning of high school. He made many sacrifices such as missing a practice or two if he had to finish school work, and on the field he wouldn’t leave a practice until he was satisfied with his performance on a certain drill he was working on.

Once Kirk had gotten to the end of his high school career he had his grades where they needed to so he began to focus strictly on his athletics. During his senior year he played three sports including getting selected to the all-state football team, as well as all state academic team.

Not only did Kirk talk about how important it was to succeed on the field and in the classroom, he talked about how important it is to give back to the community. Kirk is a very respectable person due to what he does off the field. He is always involved in raising money for kids and families in need. The thing I like about Kirk the most is the amount of time he spends with kids, either guest speaking at a school, or at a fundraiser or community event, he is always there supporting them.

Overall this was a very helpful book because of the message it had as well as informing kids on what they need to do to succeed not only in school and on the field but also in life. I would recommend this book to just about any young kid interested in learning what it takes to be a professional athlete. https://matgilbert.wordpress.com/2014/10/14/book-review-game-changer-by-kirk-cousins/
